Pilates & Mindfulness Explained

Pilates

In 1945 Joseph Pilates wrote This very rapidly progressing world, with it’s ever increasing faster tempo of living, demands that we be physically fit and alert in order that we may succeed in the unceasing race….”

Seventy years later that “faster tempo of living” has accelerated beyond measure and our need to apply the Pilates Method of Body Conditioning i.e. the complete coordination of body, mind and spirit, has become overwhelming.

Put simply Pilates give us back control of our body, brings back the natural rhythm and ‘bounce’ we need to go about our daily routines. It develops uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind and elevates the spirit.

Essentially, Pilates is about you. It’s about feeling tall, strong, balanced, reinvigorated and content. It’s the simple discipline you need to follow to attain a healthy mind and body.

Joseph Pilates introduced his methods to the world from his New York based studios and you can follow his career through An Animated History of Pilates.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness is simply an introspective method for grounding your thoughts, emotions and behaviors in the reality you are currently experiencing, so you can stand back, observe, understand yourself more fully and take care of your needs.

Everyone who partakes in a Pilates class knows how much there is to think about; breathing, alignment, using the right muscles while relaxing the others and so on. However, when you are thinking about all these things you begin to ‘live in the moment’. Your mind begins to focus on the here and now, not thinking what you might have to prepare for dinner or wonder will you have to put diesel in the car on your way home.

Here in Mindful Movements we ask you to surrender to the moment in the tranquility of our Relaxation Room, to breath in the quietude and, as gentle water flows, focus on your presence. You’re worth it: give yourself this gift.

Movement Awareness

At Mindful Movements we understand the intimate relationship between physical well being on the one hand and mindfulness on the other. Mindful Pilates takes you on a journey, unlocking knowledge that is already present in your own mind and body, about how to feel good. It teaches you ways in which you can experience for yourself how your body and mind interact and align from moment to moment and how that alignment can create a sense of “falling into the right place” both with yourself and the world around you.
